Rachel Carson's novel, Silent Spring, raised awareness on the dangers of insecticides like DDT. Her book led to the banning of DDT in the United States. Chemical companies went on the attack and said that Carson's hate for DDT caused insect-borne diseases (ex. malaria) to infect millions of Africans. In actuality, the mosquitoes became resistant to DDT and the use of pesticides was no longer effective.
